Some communities will be razed. Others will be invaded by police. And yet others will be gentrified. All of this is due to happen in Rio de Janeiro's infamous favelas (squatter communities) in the lead-up to the much-celebrated 2016 Olympics. Help us ensure community leaders have a voice!
The construction of new facilities, roads, and hotels for the 2016 Rio Olympics will begin as early as December 2009. It is estimated the event will earn the city 3 times what it invests. But how much of this will benefit the city's 1020 favelas (squatter communities)?
What will you do if you win $10,000 for this idea?
If we win the $10k, in 2010 Catalytic Communities (CatComm) will train 200 community organizers across Rio's favelas to use social media including Twitter, Facebook, WiserEarth, and video to amplify their voices and call attention of authorities and the global community in the years leading up to 2016. Online communities will be formed where the general public can "hear" what leaders from the favelas have to say, support them, and follow their work. Links will be made with the press and the mayor's office.
We will then develop an online training program and continue face-to-face capacity-building in 2011 and beyond.
